8K Super Hi-Vision Medical Camera Deployed in Advanced Clinical

Trial Transmitting Surgical Images via 5G Wireless Broadband

An MKC-820NP 8K Super Hi-Vision (8K-SHV) medical camera jointly developed by Ikegami Tsushinki Co., Ltd. and the NHK Foundation was used in a clinical trial of surgery with telementoring on February 13th, 2025, transmitting highly detailed images from a laparoscopic system via a network including local 5G wireless broadband.
The clinical trial followed tests conducted on May 7th and 8th 2024 by the National Cancer Center Hospital in Tokyo, in cooperation with the NHK Foundation. These are believed to have been a world-first for colorectal cancer investigation. The objective of the most recent trial was to confirm whether it is clinically useful to provide telementoring by transmitting and receiving 8K-SHV images in real time with a laparoscopic surgery system via a network including 5G wireless.

The MKC-820NP camera used in the clinical trials combines Ikegami’s extensive medical imaging skills together with the 8K-SHV technology which the company has cultivated over many decades of broadcast business. It also integrates the NHK Foundation’s experience and knowledge in 8K-SHV medical camera development and related clinical procedures. The MKC-820NP used in this study is a second-generation model with less than one seventh the volume and one third the mass of the earlier version. The second version also introduces compatibility with commercially available scope holders.

If the results of the clinical trials are put into practical use, they are expected to realize high-quality remote surgical support and contribute to solving the uneven distribution and shortage of surgeons and advanced medical technology, which is an issue in Japan. Ikegami will continue to develop 8K camera systems for medical use, such as improving operability at the surgical site. These advances are a continuation of the company’s aspiration to create products and systems that benefit society through technological development in the field of imaging.
